FAQ for After school surf class

Q1. Can my kid join the surf class if they don’t know how to swim?
A1. HKSL require participants can swim 10m with floatation device (ie. Swimming aid, floating board).
As surfing is conducted in shallow water, where the kids can touch the sand bottom when they are in the water. Also, they are attached to the surfboard at all time as a floatation device. But we require kids to be comfortable in the water to join the class, not afraid of being in the water.

Q2. If my kid has learnt surfing before, can he/she join?
A2. Yes. HKSL instructors will give out comment individually in the water and adjust lesson plan according to kids’ ability and progress. The wave condition is different every time, it will always be something new/ different to the participants.
More advanced skills include wave reading, paddling techquie, catch waves on their own, catch outside wave, self- launch, catch unbroken wave outside, trimming front & back side, etc.

Q3. If my kid has never learnt surfing before, can he/she join?
A3. Yes. The instructor will teach from the basic if he/she is new. The participants don’t need to have any prior experiences.

Q4. What is the content of each session?
A4. For Surf Class: The content will be mainly related to surfing and improving skills.
Coach will set lesson plan & activities according to the wave condition & group progression, recommend to join continuously to become an independent surfer!
Activities may include surfing, body-surf, body-boarding, slack-lining, SUP, paddling, team-building games, beach games, etc.
For Surfskate Class: Basic like Learning how to go forwards, stop the board, introduction of pumping. Improver skills like learning how to bottom turns, top turns, cut back on the flat ground;Smooth out the carving & pumping skills;How to do tight turn & slide turn; Practising on both front & back side. Step up skills like Practising bottom turn, top turn, cut back on a side slope/banks.

Q5. What should my kids bring for the class?
A5. For Surf Class: Sunscreen (Recommend liquid sunscreen instead of spray sunscreen), Swimming suit, Rashguard & Short, Towel,Water bottle, Flip flop,Hat, Closed toed Water shoes, Dry bag for wet stuff, Mosquito Repellent, Dry Clothes, wetsuit (If in winter)
For Surfskate Class: Wear Sport clothes & sport shoes. Bring your own protection pads & helmet.


Q6. Do you have after school class every months?
A6. The after school class will be on from September to June.

Q7. Do I need to join for all 4sessions in a month?
A7. The price is fixed at 1000hkd for 4 sessions from the first week to last week of the month.
If there are 5 sessions, the price will be 1250hkd.
It is your choice if you would like to attend all sessions in a month, it will be no refund if you choose to skip the session.

Q8. Where is the meet up point?
A8. Lantau Grocer, No.38 Lower Cheung Sha Beach

Q9. Can I also get a surf lesson while my kids are doing surf class?

A9. Yes. Please check with our instructor for the availability in advanced.

Q10. What is the instructor qualification?
A10. Head coaches are ISA (international Surfing Association) qualified Surfing, Flat water SUP, SUP Surf Instructors. We have received ILS aquatic rescue and lifeguard training and qualification in Hainan Island, Taiwan, and New Zealand. We also hold Hong Kong St. John’s First Aid Certificate. We have been teaching Surfing, SUP for more than 10 years.

We also have more than ten years of outdoor education and outdoor guiding experience. The clients include locals, tourists, international and local schools, and corporate groups. Activities include kayaking, hiking, surfing, Stand-up paddle boarding, rock climbing, camping, horse riding, etc.

We have traveled to different countries for surfing. Most importantly, we are familiar with various surfing spots in Hong Kong. Also, We have well-trained; professional & experienced staff to work with surf class.

Q11. What is the coach to student ratio?
A11. The ratio depends on the wave condition. No more than 1 instructor to 8kids in water ratio.

Q12. What is the payment method?
A12. HKSL accepts Payme, bank transfer, FPS, Wechatpay Hong Kong, credit card (with 4% charge).

Q13. When is the latest day for application?
A13. Application deadline is 3 days before the 1st class starts. Check with HKSL if you have passed the application deadline.

What is the minimum amout of participation in order to open class?
Minimum 6 kids to open class. If there is not enough registration, we will do a full refund for the parents.

Q14. What is the arrangement if there is no wave?
A14. We will have alternative activities such as beach games, surf related water games, Tie Dye, screen-printing workshop etc.

Q15. What is the arrangement when the bad weather happened when the class started?
A15. It depends on the weather condition. We will keep close contact to parents/ guardian and keep you updated by 3pm via whatsapp. See the bad weather arrangement below.


Q16. What is the bad weather policy?
A16.Class will be rescheduled or suspended if a Typhoon Signal No 3 or above is raised, a Black warning is in force 2 hour before the class start time. (If Typhoon Signal No 1/ Red or Amber Rainstorm warning is in force, class will be continued.)
A re-scheduling can be made free of charge and can be made once only. The new scheduled date shall be made within 30 days of the original scheduled date. The booking will be treated as cancellation for any failure to re-schedule the booking.

Thunderstorm Warning Arrangement
The class will keep going if the Thunderstorm Warning is issued, but the water activities will not take place if there are any thunderstorms above activity location. HKO Lightning radar will always be checked to ensure the water activities will be taken place safely in the water. Head coaches are very familiar to read different weather apps for real time weather condition. Safety is always our 1st priority.

Bad Surf Condition Arrangement
Surf activities will be suspended or stopped until the surf condition is suitable and safe for the participants.

Alternative activities for bad weather/ not suitable surf condition
Skimboard/ bodyboard/surfskate

Raining Condition
It won’t affect the water activities.

+ Hong Kong Surfing Lesson and its instructors reserve all the right of final decision.
No refund shall be made under bad weather policy.

Q17. What is the cancellation arrangement?

Confirmation
Spot will only be confirmed when full payment is made.


Cancellation
For any cancellation after booking has been confirmed, a 10% of total payment will be charged.
For cancellation made within 10days prior to the scheduled day, a 50% of total payment will be charged.
For cancellation made within 72hours prior to the scheduled time, a 100% of total payment will be charged.
No refund will be made.


No Show
For no show on the class day, full price (250hkd/lesson) will be charged.

If you choose to skip class, there will be no refund.


Lateness Policy
The unnoticed lateness will be considered as no show and no show policy applied.

Sick Leave
* Parents can reschedule the surf class if there is a proof of medical certificate that covered the class date.
Parents need to show the Proof to HKSL staff within 2days after the class; as well as contact HKSL staff before class starts. Otherwise, it considers as no show and no show policy applied.
HKSL will charge 100hkd/day for the rescheduling admin fee.
+No refund will be made under sick leave policy.
The remaining class fee will be used as credit for next surf lesson booking, valid for 2months.

Q18. What is the covid arrangement?

A18. HKSL will offer made-up class (valid for 3months) if HKSL cannot accommodate the government newest covid-policy. No refund will be made.
HKSL will not be responsible for any covid-related issue such as confirmed cases and isolation during and after the class date.

HKSL will not do refund for any cancellation or rescheduling due to covid- related issue such as confirmed cases and isolation. With doctor verification or related document, the paid surf class fee can be redeemed for next surf lesson booking, valid for 3months. Parents should contact HKSL staff immediately after discovering covid releated issue before class starts.

HKSL will charge 100hkd/day for the rescheduling admin fee.

A 5% surcharge applies to credit card payments
